SAL IS LOOKING FOR: MASTER THESIS – DEVELOPING PRINTING PROCESSES ON A ELECTROHYDRODYNAMIC (EHD) PRINTER FOR ADVANCED HETEROGENEOUS STRUCTURES (F/M/D)

YOUR FUTURE RESPONSIBILITIES

Topic of the master thesis is focused on experimental work on Electrohydrodynamic (EHD) printer. The EHD printer in question is a beyond state-of-the-art laboratory prototype and offers the possibility to be a part of the ground-breaking research activities. The objective of the thesis is to develop and establish printing process for different types of inks (conductive, semiconductive, dielectric) and to conduct a comprehensive DOE study with the goal to test EHD printer performance for the minimal resolutions, ink printability, printing speed etc.
Future tasks and responsibilities:

  • Study influence of ink properties on the printer performance.
  • Study influence of process parameters on the printer performance.
  • Perform electrical, mechanical and optical measurements.
  • Evaluate and compare the measurement results.
  • Documentation and reporting.
  • Support in publication writing.

YOUR PROFILE

  • Master student in microelectronics, microsystem technology, semiconductor technologies, material science, physics or similar fields.
  • Experience in cleanroom would be beneficial appreciated.
  • Experience with printing techniques (e.g. inkjet, EHD printing, spraying, jetting etc.) is desirable.
  • Motivated and autonomous personality, well organized and enjoys working in a dynamic and multi-cultural environment.
  • Good analytical and data processing skills.
  • Oral and written communication skills in English.

YOUR FUTURE RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership

  • Establishment of a dedicated research unit focusing on power electronic converter systems for broad range of fields and applications.
  • Vision for long-term research opportunities in power electronics.
  • Setting up and managing research projects together with a variety of industrial and academic partners.
  • Definition and leading of funded research projects.
  • Shaping the division research program and project portfolio together with supervisors and peers.
  • Effective delegation of research questions to the right combination of SAL scientists for best team performance.
  • Overall, guiding the research unit towards generation of high-quality research findings, scientific excellence, and economic impact.

Technology

  • Development of power electronic hardware topologies and architectures. Focus on highly compact DC/DC and DC/AC converting systems for various fields of application with low to medium power ranges.
  • Multi objective optimization techniques.
  • Developing of control architectures and modulation strategies for dynamic and efficient converting systems.
  • Design of magnetic components and transformers (incl. planar).
  • Vision for exploiting wide-band gap semiconductors and other novel components in future power electronic systems.

YOUR PROFILE

  • PhD degree in electrical engineering, electronics, applied physics or related fields with a specialization in power electronics.
  • At least 6 years of practical experience in power electronics. Experience in a scientific environment would be beneficial.
  • Expertise in power electronic hardware topologies with a focus on DC/DC converters.
  • Expertise in control engineering related to power electronic systems.
  • Strong scientific track record as evidenced by publications, invited lectures, etc.
  • Knowledge of semiconductor physics is a plus.
  • Experience with the Austrian and European funding landscape.
  • Active industrial and academic network.
  • Project management skills.
  • Autonomous, well organized and enjoy working in a dynamic and multi-cultural team.
  • Leadership qualities, the ability to inspire, promote and motivate young scientists.
  • Oral and written communication skills in English.

  • Research in the field of the PhD-topic with the aim to achieve a PhD degree within three years,
  • Collaboration within the research group and the research focus on additive manufacturing, fabrication strategies, simulation and optimization methods.

 

YOUR PROFILE

  • Master Degree in Material Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, Telematics or a related subject.

  • Design of new and innovative MEMS devices based on piezoelectric thin film technlogy.
  • Modelling of piezo MEMS devices using analytical and/or finite element method to meet the desired specifications.
  • Development of Piezo MEMS devices such as PMUT, micro-mirror or microphone from concept to prototype.
  • Design DOE to understand and improve device physics, materials and fabrication. Characterization of the sensors and tranducers.
  • Possibility to be involved in MEMS microfabrication and prototyping in clean room facility by using 200mm wafer level technology.
  • Scientific communication / reporting of research results.
  • Project management.

YOUR PROFILE:

  • PhD degree in microengineering or related fields such as mechanical or electrical engineering, or applied physics, with a focus on microtechnology preferably with significant piezo MEMS experience.
  • Having at least 4 years relevant work experience or postdoc with relevant publication records.
  • Strong expertise in at least one of the following piezo MEMS fields: PMUT, piezo actuated micro-mirror, piezo microphone, BAW and SAW devices.
  • Strong knowledge in semiconductor technologies and practical and professional experience in related cleanroom microfabrication processes and piezoelectric thin film technology.
  • Expert with FEM simulation methods and tools (COMSOL).
  • Interested in piezo MEMS development.
  • Interested in application-oriented development of innovative sensors concepts.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in Linux administration, preferably with Red Hat
  • Experience with core scripting languages (Python, Shell) used for task automation including an understanding of networking concepts
  • Experience developing and interpreting detailed installation instructions and supporting documentation to effect system design deployments
  • Demonstrated success in automating server builds, standardizing images, and managing Linux systems via central management tools such as Fog, Ansible, Satellite, Spacewalk, or Puppet, etc.
  • Experience with deployment and administrative repositories through creating Ansible manifests and Shell scripts
  • Knowledge and proficiency in developing scripts using Bash, Korn, Perl, or Python
  • Java and DSL experience

  • Development of and support with theoretical topics, analytical modelling, numerical simulations, data analysis and programming for various applications with sensing and actuating MEMS technologies (mostly focusing on magnetics, thermal, structural mechanics, and fluids) in theoretical physics and applied mathematics.
  • One specific focus is the development of custom, special purpose simulation for magnetics, including magnet system design, micro-magnetics, AMR and fluxgate sensor developments and eddy current sensing.

YOUR PROFILE:

  • A PhD degree in Theoretical physicist, applied physics, applied mathematics or similar field of study.
  • At least 4 years of experience in Research & Development. Fundamental knowledge on semiconductor technology.
  • Must have experience with analytical and numerical methods beyond the use of standard FE tools.
  • Interest in the development of numerical and analytical models and their application in
  • applied research.
  • Development and analysis of sensor systems, MEMS, chips, industrial machinery, and multi-physics coupling between electromagnetic, thermal, structural mechanics and fluid simulations.
  • Experience in project acquisition and customer communication. Fluent in English.
  • German is a plus as well as knowledge in Python.

YOUR FUTURE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible of piezo thin-film development by (co-)sputtering technology with a state- of-the-art cluster tool from EVATEC for small scale R&D purpose.
  • Developing advanced piezo thin-film deposition process with novel materials such as AlScN and PZT for piezo MEMS applications such as SAW/BAW devices, PMUT and other piezo based MEMS devices.
  • Solving thin-film deposition issues related to material selection and (co-)sputtering process parameters and take corrective actions.
  • Designs and performs advanced experiments, data analyses, and improves the process.
  • Collaborate as part of microsystem research team in ongoing projects by performing state-of-the-art investigations on materials and thin-film technology for diverse MEMS applications.
  • Performing data analysis using analytical calculations, modelling, and standard statistical methods.
  • Generating innovative ideas to improve MEMS device performance.
  • Working in advanced microfabrication ISO5 clean room facility.
  • High quality thin-film development by using advanced deposition technologies such as PE-ALD, PVD, HiPIMS and PECVD.
  • Scientific communication, reporting of research results and drive technical innovation and generate IP.

YOUR PROFILE:

  • PhD degree in material or related fields preferably with a focus on thin-film technology for MEMS applications.
  • Minimum 5 years of hands’ on experience in working in at least one of the following technologies: Sputtering, PEALD or PECVD.
  • Relevant publication records in piezo thin film process development engineering role. Strong experience working with cleanroom equipment involving  thin film  deposition and materials characterization.
  • Strong materials expertise such as dielectric materials (e.g. oxides and nitrides) and piezo thin-films (e.g. AlN, AlScN, PZT etc.).
  • Expertise on measurement and analysis of thin-films by: (SEM, EDX, XRD, Ellipsometry, piezo-characterization and etc.).
  • Expertise on thin-film  growth,  composition,  microstructure  and  material  property. Good knowledge about different kind of microsystems such as SAW/BAW devices, Piezo MEMS and etc is a plus.
  • Good knowledge in semiconductor technologies and practical and professional experience in related cleanroom microfabrication processes is a plus.
  • Expertise with ab-initio calculation is a big plus.
  • Interested in application-oriented process development of innovative sensors concepts. Autonomous, well organized and enjoy working in a dynamic and multicultural team.
  • Oral and written communication skills in English. Good experience in project management.
