This week at SAL, we had the pleasure of hosting Prof. Carsten Rockstuhl from the Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT) for a captivating seminar on Digital Blueprints for Photonic Structures with Properties on Demand.Prof. Rockstuhl shared his expertise in theoretical and computational nano-optics, offering a deep dive into the inverse design of photonic systems – shifting from traditional simulation approaches to designing structures that deliver targeted optical functionalities.His talk covered a broad range of techniques including Bayesian inference, topology optimization and machine learning methods such as neural networks. Through compelling examples from photonic integrated circuits, metasurfaces and 3D nanoprinted nanostructures, he demonstrated how these tools are shaping the next generation of light-based technologies.The seminar sparked exciting discussions among our researchers working in integrated photonics, optical design and nanofabrication.
