Recap: MCL at the Long Night of Research Numerous guests visited our station and gained exciting insights into the world of modern gas sensors: from monitoring air quality to the early detection of leaks. We demonstrated how sensors are built, how they work, and why they can now be XXX times smaller than a human nose 👃🔬 A special highlight was the visit to the electron microscopy lab, along with exploring the role of AI and data analysis, which enables increasingly precise gas detection despite ongoing miniaturization. Topics such as gases and recycling were also presented. At the hands-on stations, it was time to try things out, measure, and be amazed: an experience for all age groups! 👩🔬👨🔬 A big thank you also to Linde for their generous support with free helium. From materials to scalable photonic systems – what’s next for integrated photonics?At SPIE Photonics Europe, our colleague Jasmin Spettel gave an invited talk about SAL’s latest work on:“Sputtered Aluminum Nitride-on-Insulator for scalable Integrated Photonics.”Aluminum nitride (AlN) is emerging as a highly promising material platform for photonic integrated circuits (PICs), offering a wide transparency window from ultraviolet to mid-infrared and enabling a rich set of functionalities such as optical nonlinearities, pyroelectricity and piezoelectricity.At SAL, we are addressing one of the key challenges: achieving high-quality sputtered AlN thin films on SiO₂. Our approach combines material characterization with the design and fabrication of PIC components operating at ~1.55 µm telecom wavelength. At Automotive Lighting Exhibition China 2026, one thing became clear: automotive lighting is evolving from illumination to intelligence. In the era of software-defined vehicles, lighting is becoming a system for communication, sensing and interaction — from cyan signaling lights for autonomous driving, to immersive interior lighting and LiDAR-enabled perception.
