To TRANSFORM the future

The SILICON ALPS Cluster, consisting of around 130 leading companies in the semiconductor industry and microelectronics (ESBS), is initiating the innovative and future-orientated educational initiative ‘TRANSFORM’. This co-operative project, in close collaboration with TU Graz LLL and all renowned technical universities in the region, aims to support the companies on their way to becoming a leading technology region and thus establish the location for EBS technologies.

The ESBS sector is facing global challenges such as geopolitical shifts, the climate crisis and rising energy prices. At the same time, demographic change and a shortage of STEM graduates are exacerbating the need for highly qualified specialists. By 2030, there could be a shortage of up to 63,400 technical experts.

In this situation, the SILICON ALPS Cluster has launched the ‘TRANSFORM’ education initiative to specifically promote innovative skills, particularly in the field of ‘Power Cyber Physical Systems’ and digitalisation. The aim is to equip the participating companies for the future.

Project goals

Competences in the field of ‘power cyber physical systems’ – deepen topics and increase expertise.
Sustainably increase RTDI+D competences in Austrian companies, especially in SMEs.
Intensify knowledge transfer between science, research and companies in both directions.
Improve the risk management of companies with regard to cyber attacks.
Train people in the area of sustainability.
Organise workshops on project development and networking of interdisciplinary participants with the cluster’s ‘Areas of Excellence’.

DI Dr. techn. Robert Gfrerer, MPH

Managing Director

I have extensive experience as a Managing Director, most recently at the build! Startup Center in Klagenfurt. Before that, I served as the Managing Director of Ortner Reinraumtechnik GmbH and spent a decade in a managerial role for a cluster, specifically the Human.technology Styria GmbH. With my background in telematics and a doctorate in electrical engineering, I bring both academic knowledge and practical experience from the business and industrial sectors. Out of 40 applicants, I was chosen as the ideal candidate for the roles at the SILICON ALPS Cluster. My main focus is on initiating cooperative projects and fostering a culture of collaboration in the region. I firmly believe that networks and clusters are pivotal for innovations, economic success, and regional and corporate competitiveness. I’m eager to dive into industry-relevant project developments in the cluster and am particularly excited about collaborating with a strong, cross-state team.
