On Friday 26.04 we experienced a highly creative and beautiful day in the history of the Silicon Alps events. This time the spotlight was again on young talents, demonstrating us that the future of technology development in Austria in good hands!
The 14th Austria-wide Matura project competition at the Carinthian University of Applied Sciences awarded the best ideas in the categories: health, technology and economy. By the end of March 2019, secondary school students from all over Austria submitted 115 diploma theses as well as prescientific papers. Cash prizes worth a total of 5,400 euros were awarded by Kärntner Sparkasse in all categories and 1,500 euros by the Silicon Alps Cluster for technical smart systems projects. The project teams presented their submitted projects in the form of poster presentation & demos.
The idea of the Silicon Alps special Prize in smart Systems originated in the Silicon Alps cluster focus group Sub Systems and Integration. This cluster focus group strongly supported the contest with the prize concept and idea suggestions prior to the competition, as well as four jury members for the evaluation of the numerous technical projects (about 40). Three special prizes of 500 EUR each for projects in the field of smart systems were awarded. The winners were also offered the possibility of a one-month internship at one of the Silicon Alps Cluster Partners (between 2019-2021 according to their interest and the time availability of companies).

„SKYSTEPS – Automatische Tourenski Niveauregelung“ : The Austrian touring skiing has become a highly popular sport with 500,000 to 700,000 touring skiers (Source: SKIMO Austria). A constant problem of this sport is the climbing aid because this must be adjusted manually depending on the slope. The ski bindings must be adjusted by hand or with ski poles, depending on the slope. This interruption breaks the rhythm, causing complications for some athletes. In the proposed project the hill climbing system of the ski touring is to be renewed so that the climbing aid (level control) is automatically adjusted by the control system. The level control calculations are made by a microcontroller. The adjustment takes place with the help of a stepping motor. The entire level control is mounted between the touring ski bindings. A patent has already been applied for this newly developed system.

„Netzautarkes und portables Energiesystem“: The solution has been designed to supply places that are not connected to the electrical network — the so-called island systems. In the usual situation the consumers are supplied with energy by means of diesel generators or renewable energies. Network-autonomous systems are based on this principle and supplement the system with a storage medium, usually large batteries. The current solution adds portability to the system, so it could easily be transported from one place to another. In contrast to the conventional Powerbanks, which have only USB outputs, the proposed energy system also has car sockets, a direct 12V connection to the battery, and an inverter. It is possible to supply household standard 230V devices with up to 600W. In addition, the system has an embedded system for the acquiring of measurement data and for controlling the components of the system. An app for data readout has also been developed.

„CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) Trainer“: Every year, approximately 15,000 people in Austria die from sudden cardiac death – which is equivalent to one person every 30 minutes. Unfortunately, in only 17% of all cases, first aiders perform a Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, also mainly due to deficiencies in training. Currently, the resuscitation dolls used in the training do not offer any possibilities to independently check the quality of the cardiac massage performed. In the current project, a reanimation doll (borrowed from the Red Cross) is equipped with sensors for measuring the two quality-critical parameters: pressure depth and frequency. In addition, the correct hand position on the doll is checked by means of several pressure sensors. The collected measurement data are then used on the one hand to provide real-time feedback to the user via LED strip mounted on the chest. Furthermore, the measurement data are evaluated, graphically displayed and saved in an Android app. Thus, they can also be used for later debriefing and for tracking individual learning progress.
