Microelectronics in Austria
In the context of Europe’s microelectronics industry, the industrial location Austria provides a highly sophisticated industrial profile, which also reveals major contributions in attaining European goals in the field of microelectronic and nanoelectronic components and systems. Three integrated device manufacturers (IDMs) are based in Austria, two of which have local production capacities. The location additionally boasts a number of leading international equipment suppliers, strong niche players in the software and electronics sector, several small and medium-sized research centres and cluster organisations, as well as a good selection of specialised university departments. All of this is complemented by powerful user industries (especially in the automotive, aeronautic and rail sector), supporting the vertical integration of innovative microelectronic solutions in highly developed local value added chains. These businesses provide jobs for 23 thousand to 30 thousand people in Austria and for 35 thousand to 46 thousand people worldwide. If the relevant value added chains of the ECSEL-Austria target group are included, there are likely to be between 65 thousand and 85 thousand employees (directly and indirectly) working in the field of microelectronics, embedded systems and smart systems integration in Austria. The sales volume generated by these companies amounts to more than 15 billion euros.
Technology, Research & Innovation in Carinthia
Carinthia, Austria’s southernmost federal province, brings together superior expertise, advanced technologies and an attractive mix of industries embedded in a highly innovative environment.
In recent years, Carinthia has demonstrated a powerful development in technology, innovation and research. In particular, there have been some targeted efforts to establish research institutions in the core fields of the Carinthian industry and to introduce companies to research centres and industrial centres of excellence. Its research quota has been on the rise since 2009; with 2.9 percent, Carinthia currently ranks fifth (2013) in all of Austria. At the same time, an extraordinarily high share of Carinthia’s research is based in industries (75 percent).
Leading global enterprises, such as Infineon Technologies Austria, Lam Research, KapschTrafficCom, Mahle or Flextronics International, are a key factor in Carinthia’s exceptional technology expertise. In the last few years, such companies have been expanding their local research and development centres. Together with many other research-intensive small and medium-sized enterprises they have a determining influence on future advancements, amongst others in the fields of electronics, microelectronics, mechatronics and medical technology.
Technology Hub Styria
No other Austrian federal province brings as many innovative products and services onto the market as Styria. With a R&D rate of 4 percent, Styria has been above the EU targets for 2010 for many years and occupies a top position among all European regions. Alongside an outstanding training, research and business landscape, one of the main reasons for this is Styria’s residents.
Five universities with over 40,000 students, an internationally renowned system of universities of applied sciences and numerous research institutions have turned Styria into a veritable technology hub. Its density of highly qualified professionals is certainly unrivalled in Europe. Styria is a land of innovation and a central part of the Alps-Adriatic region, one of Europe’s most promising for the future.
The transfer of knowledge and technology is both a core competence and an essential part of Styria’s story of success: The majority of Austria’s competence centres conduct their research and other work in Styria; university spin-offs are part of the daily routine, and independent research institutions, such as Joanneum Research, are always open for businesses.
